Alan Swann: Leeds are not so much disliked as completely unlikeable

I'M not sure why, but Posh beating Leeds on Saturday was right up there with seeing off Cambridge, Northampton and the imposters from MK Dons.
Actually I lie, I know exactly why I enjoyed it so much. Leeds are not so much disliked as completely unlikeable.

I returned from a short break yesterday to find my inbox full of spiteful comments from Leeds fans. They took exception to a light-hearted feature ahead of Saturday's game detailing why Posh could beat a team everyone expects to romp away with the League One title.

Now, even ignoring the fact that I was right as usual, it was a ridiculous reaction from a bunch of humourless and intellectually-challenged football fans as you can see from the tamer e-mails printed elsewhere on this page.

I actually feel sorry for the few decent fans among them. It can't be easy supporting a club that played in the semi-finals of the European Champions League seven years ago only for mis-management on and off the pitch to send them spinning down the Football League.

But it was still a bit rich for a couple of Leeds fans to accuse me of inciting trouble by declaring that everyone hates their club and that Darragh McAnthony might be a better chairman than Ken Bates.

Leeds is the club that entertained Lee Bowyer and Dennis Wise in recent seasons. They are hardly peace-makers and come to think of it Don Revie's dream team was full of dirty, sly players who had nicknames like 'Break Your Legs'.

Leeds fans need a huge reality check and they need it quickly because on the evidence of the weekend they are going to be visiting grounds like London Road for years to come.

I had thought, and hoped, that John Motson had retired from football commentary, but there he was on Match of the Day on Sunday spouting his usual brand of nonsense.

Motson has come to the conclusion that Chelsea play more attractive football under Scolari than they did under Mourinho. Really? As statements of the bleeding obvious, that's right up there with Posh playing in a more entertaining manner under Darren Ferguson than Keith Alexander.

I am warming to Scolari. I did wonder about his appointment as he hadn't managed at club level for a decade or so, but he has quickly turned Chelsea into a team of entertainers playing with great flair.

In other words they play like a team worth zillions of quid. They'll walk the Premier League this season unless referees continue to favour Manchester United so blatantly and Liverpool remain as lucky as they have been so far this season.

GOOD to see the Liverpool bias is alive and well on the same programme.

According to old Liverpool lads Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson, Michael Owen should be in the England squad because he's better than all the other strikers apart from Wayne Rooney.

Of course he is. That's why there was a stampede of big clubs all trying to sign him once Real Madrid realised they'd signed a dud, whose main asset of pace had long since disappeared.

There's a reason why Owen has joined those other washed-up players like Nicky Butt and Damien Duff at useless old Newcastle and that's because he's way past his best.

Perhaps the Leeds supporters spiteful comments were a reflection of the general tone of your anti Leeds Utd tirades over recent years.

Don't make the mistake of assuming that all us Leeds fans need a reality check about our future prospects. I personally have no desire for Leeds to get back to the premiership. It has been so distorted by money that only 4 teams are capable of winning the title. And there is no prospect of that changing any time soon. Football in the Championship and division 1 has been like a breath of fresh air. Results are less predictable and are not a matter of life and death. Players displaying prima donna tendencies are ridiculed rather than indulged.

The Johnsons Paint Trophy and Carling Cup have a purpose. They give teams like Leeds (and Posh) something to play for.

First of all, congratulations on your Cup final win against a very poor Leeds side. Let me assure you that they can play much better than that and will finish in the promotion places this season. Secondly, i would like to comment on your articles. I find it amazing that a responsible journalist can be so inflammatory with his comments. Have you any idea how your script is being taken in context? I suspect not. What on earth you or Peterborough have against Leeds is beyond me but let me assure of this, you will be wearing a different complexion after the game at Elland road, and by the way, I see you have done your homework NOT! It was BITE your legs(Norman Hunter) and Leeds were not a dirty team. Ask some real football experts. Good luck to PU for the rest of the season.
