Go Green - Helping you do your bit for the environment

Al Gore backs ET green campaign

Page last updated: Thursday, 4 October, 2007

The Evening Telegraph launched its Go Green campaign in 2007, and it was backed by former US Vice President and environmental campaigner Al Gore.

We want our readers to do their bit for the environment by making small changes to their everyday lives.

Go Green campaign is backed by Al GoreMr Gore, who narrated the Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which highlighted the devastating impact global warming is having on the planet, praised The Evening Telegraph for its stand.

He said: “Good luck to you. You are doing the right thing. I hope people support you.”

Mr Gore, who was Bill Clinton’s Vice President for eight years, said that the city must reduce the amount of poisonous carbon emissions that are spewed into the sky.

Our Go Green campaign aims to raise awareness of environment issues, challenge behaviour and encourage you, our readers, to join us by changing one thing which may benefit the environment.

Mr Gore said: “All future generations depend on our ability to face up to this challenge. Never have we faced a crisis that could end all of human civilisation.”

10 things we can all do to help the planet

If each of us made the change to just one of these it would soon add up in the fight against global warming:

  • Change to energy efficient light bulbs
  • Use reusable bags for life instead of plastic bags
  • Do not leave electric appliances, such as the television, on standby
  • Walk or cycle instead of driving, take the bus or car share
  • Recycle your old Evening Telegraph and other papers and don't throw away rubbish that can be recycled
  • Use less water by boiling only the amount needed for tea or coffee
  • Compost kitchen and plant waste
  • Use local produce or grow your own vegetables
  • Spend time outdoors instead of sitting in front of the TV – it saves energy
  • Don't use an electrical appliance, such as a dishwasher or tumble dryer, for a day
