Festival chairman Brian Smithyman said the decision had been taken due to the coronavirus pandemic as there is “not enough time to do justice to safely organising it this year”.

The popular event will return in September 2022.

Mr Smithyman said: “The Whittlesey Festival, normally held in September, has grown year on year to become a major attraction in the Whittlesey calendar of events.

“It is with deep regret that, after considering the many issues involved in staging an event of this nature, due to the pandemic there is just not enough time to do justice to safely organising it this year.

“However, we will be back in September 2022 when we will look forward to welcoming old and new friends to an event that everyone can be proud of. Please understand that this has not been an easy decision to make, but the enjoyment and safety of everyone attending is, and has always been, of paramount importance to us.”
