Two of our young people, Joshua Tharby and Alice Williams, who both work locally, set up an online conference all about property. I was amongst the guest speakers invited to contribute.

Everyone who attended the virtual event was asked to make an online donation and the amount raised topped £15,000 for the NHS. I commend Joshua and Alice for doing such a sterling job.

Since last week we have had a huge amount of further activity through the Labour Group’s coronavirus mini-hub - COVAID.

We’ve heard a lot through the media about the lack of PPE, especially facemasks, and clearly many people have taken this on board. Amongst others: local businessmen Sufyan Sadiq of Insure4Sure and Arif Aziz of Coversure have each donated 500 facemasks;

Azer Mahmood of local business Handtec.co.uk donated 1,000 facemasks.

The Labour Group also donated 1,000 facemasks and almost all of the donated masks have already been distributed by COVAID, delivered by hand to 15 care homes across the city.

Tariq Mahmood from Madina Grill helped source £200 worth of much need UHT milk. This has been a huge help for local foodbanks.

These are just a few examples of the many offers of assistance that have been received and those that I haven’t mentioned are just as much appreciated for their effort to push forward a concerted drive to help the many who are in need as a result of this terrible pandemic, and of course to support our wonderful NHS and other care workers.

So, as a reminder, you can contact one of the four ambassadors: Councillors Dennis Jones, Ikra Yasin, Lucinda Robinson and Dr Shabina Qayyum.
