City MP lashes out as Prime Minister comes under pressure over mini-budget

Peterborough MP Paul Bristow has hit out at those ‘selfish MPs’ who are mostly in safe seats, who he says are undermining Prime Minister Liz Truss.

The outburst from the city MP, who represents the marginal Peterborough constituency, comes as Ms Truss faces pressure from Conservative MPs to ditch the much-criticised mini-budget that has been blamed for tipping the markets into chaos, threatening the value of pensions and mortgages for many thousands of people.

It is reported many Conservative MPs are pondering whether there should be a change of party leadership just 39 days after Ms Truss took office.

Now Mr Bristow has taken to Twitter to lambast those MPs who, he says, have openly undermined Ms Truss since the day she took office as Prime Minister.

He says many do not deserve to be Conservative MPs and warns there are plenty of talented would-be MPs in the wings.

Mr Bristow tweeted: “Some of the same colleagues (usually in safe seats) who ousted Boris Johnson, have openly undermined his successor since day 1.

"This is selfish and self-seeking. What do they want?”

He adds: “They don’t deserve to be Conservative MPs.

"Plenty of talent on our candidates list.”

Mr Bristow was an early champion of Ms Truss who visited Peterborough early in her Conservative Party leader campaign.

Mr Bristow won the Peterborough seat with a majority of 2,580 votes at the December 2019 general election which nationally gave a landslide majority to then Conservative leader Boris Johnson. The seat had been Labour controlled.
