Youth disability group the Access Champions is hoping to make big changes in the inclusivity of disabled people in Peterborough.

The group is making it its personal mission for the disabled community to ‘feel included and to encourage people to be more accepting’.

Dedicating hours of their time, the team at City College Peterborough is actively creating new events and wanting to do more to make disabled residents feel at ease.

Tutor of the group, Aisleen Parker, is hopeful for the group’s goals. She said: “I’m really proud of how far the Access Champions have come. We want to break down barriers for everyone with disabilities in the local community.”

After climbing Mount Snowdon last year, the team raised enough money to fund its inclusive event Coffee Shop After Dark - a party night for young people with disabilities where they can meet new friends and feel confident in themselves.

Antonio Craig from Access Champions said: “We support the disability community; we want people to be more open and for people to be accepting.”

Not stopping there, the group is going to climb Mount Snowdon once again in May to raise money to keep their accessible social night running and create new events for disabled people. A real uphill battle, the group hopes the climb shows everyone what disabled people can achieve.
