New roadworks on the A605 will begin next week as progress continues on the £32 million King’s Dyke crossing scheme.

From Monday, March 1, until Friday, March 5, there will be two-way traffic lights set up between 7.30am and 6pm.

This is to allow a temporary access road to be built into the main site compound on the Whittlesey side of the level crossing.

The scheme, which includes a new road and bridge over the Ely to Peterborough railway line, is due open to traffic by December 2022 and will help to end the long delays for motorists.

The level crossing will be permanently closed as part of the scheme.

Posting an update on Facebook, Fenland District Council leader Cllr Chris Boden said: “Work is progressing well on site with Jones Bros now filling a section of Star Pit quarry. They have also completed all 12 of the railway bridge columns.

“The focus is now turning to constructing the reinforced earth abutment walls. These will be constructed up to the top level of the columns and will allow the bridge beams to eventually be placed on top of the walls to form the bridge.

“The site team are also continuing with the construction of the underpass, which is on schedule to be completed in April.”
