For once the result didn't matter.
Posh lost their final League Two match of the season, but there was still a party atmosphere in the final minutes at London Road as promotion was celebrated in style by a crowd estimated at 10,500.
Darlington scored with their only two shots of the game to take full advtantage of a pretty poor home effort.
Ricky Ravenhill's third minute strike was deflected into the back of the net off Craig Morgan and Micky Cummins added a second six minutes after the break after Adam Newton had been caught in possession.
Posh never looked up for the challenge as Craig Mackail-Smith suffered a rare off day in front of goal.
Aaron Mclean saw a shot cleared off the line by former Posh team-mate Alan White in the first-half, while George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith were thwarted by substitute goalkeeper Przemyslaw Kazimierczak.
First-choice 'keeper David Stockdale limped out of the action in the 12th minute after a strong challenge from Mclean.
Mclean was presented with the Evening Telegraph player-of-the-year accolade before the game by fan Lee Jackson who won a competition for the honour.

Why did it say thousands turned out for the parade when there were barely 600? It was such a small parade you'd think they'd been relegated.

dan jackson...........it states hundreds in the article..not thousands learn to read correctly...and yes i was at the game .posh were very poor indeed..but they had done the hard work before the game..by getting promoted.so it did not really matter...one thing i will say is..i was in the main family stand..not far away from the away fans in the all seated area IT CLEARLY STATED IN THE POSH PROGRAM THAT THE CLUB WERE ASKING FANS TO PUT SUGGESTIONS FORWARD TO IMPROVE SAFTY AT THE GROUND ETC...well if the stewards who are supposed to seat fans and guide them to there seats did there job all the fighting that took place in the ground in the family stand would never have happened
FACT ONE
i wittnessed a steward being confronted by what was clearly the STONE ISLAND ETC YOB CLAN tell the stewards that they were season ticket holders at which the steward asked to see the season ticket and they were shown and let threw to the seating area..in no time there were at least 50/60 of these mindless idiots there standing chanting and being complete meat heads even throwing crutches(yes WALKING HOSPITAL CRUTCHES) at the away fans...3 people were arrested i beliave and all the children who happened to witness this and get caught up in it were clearly very upset, ITS A DISGRACE THAT THE STEWARDS WERE NOT GIVEN CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS ..NO SEAT TICKET NO ENTRY.....!! this would have stopped this from happening..........if this is the future of things to come at peterbourgh expect empty family stands.i hope one of the bosses of pboro united is reading this..and will witness and clearly view the cctv footage of this incident as there were at least 3 with cam corders(policemen)and BAN THESE BONE HEADS FOR LIFE.....great club..AWFULL STEWARDS....DONT LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN..AS IT COULD BE YOURE CHILD IN THE FIREING LINE NEXT TIME......
