Peterborough Town’s bid for a hat-trick of Northants League titles got off to a smooth start with a six-wicket win over Desborough at Bretton Gate yesterday (April 24).

The visitors did well to recover from 63-5 to post 192, but Town eased home with almost eight overs to spare.

Opening batsman Chris Milner finished unbeaten on 63 after partner Josh Smith had stroked a quickfire 42 and skipper David Clarke a more sedate 32.

Oundle Town’s hopes of challenging for a first Premier Division crowd already look ambitious. They were crushed by seven wickets at Rushden & Higham.

Local bragging rights in the Lincs Premier Division went to Bourne who won at neighbours Market Deeping by 95 runs on the opening day of the campaign.

A fifth wicket stand of 125 between Pete Morgan (72) and Sam Evison (71) rescued Bourne from 80-4. They went on to post a formidable 264-7 in their 50 overs. Morgan’s runs came off just 60 balls and included three sixes and eight fours.

Deeping were never in the hunt in reply despite a fine 72 from opener Josh Smith. Smith (3-43) at least enjoyed a fine all-round day.

They beat Cambridge CC by eight wickets after restricting their visitors to 163-9. Brett Bennett bagged 4-31 for Stamford before Andy Hulme’s 76 not out ensured an easy win.

March Town beat Ramsey by nine runs in a Division One derny, but Wisbech were well beaten by Eaton Socon despite the best efforts of evergreen Gary Freear (3-53 & 32).
