The virtual choir project is part of the ambitious Arts Council England-funded Peterborough singing strategy being delivered by Peterborough Sings! on behalf of Peterborough Music Hub and Peterborough City Council and has been organised instead of the popular schools’ singing days which normally take place twice annually at The Cresset.

With thousands of participants so far, these are themed to a particular musical genre –Abba, Beatles, West End – and have been fantastically well received by schools, teachers, parents and children from across the city and beyond.

Will Prideaux, director of Peterborough Sings, says: “Covid-19 and lockdown has been a real challenge for us and for choirs across the world, but there’s no question of just stopping, music and singing are just as important now as they always have been – if not more so, with their proven benefits to physical and mental health – we’ve had to think creatively about ways to keep singing even though physical rehearsals aren’t possible at the moment.

“We’ve moved a lot of our work online very successfully during lockdown and the virtual choir is a fun, safe, way to get kids involved and engaged with singing. We’re really excited to be able to provide this opportunity and we’re confident it will be a great success…please spread the word!”
