Residents are being reminded not to use unlicensed waste carriers after a Peterborough man was given a heavy fine for hiring one who dumped his rubbish in a city street.

Mariusz Pukalski hired an unlicensed carrier to remove household waste which was then found dumped in bin bags in Dogsthorpe Road. Documentation found inside the bags led officers to Pukalski’s address.

Pukalski was arrested and admitted that had paid someone to clean his house and take waste away. He appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court earlier this week and was fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £312 and a £40 victim surcharge.

Councillor Nigel Simons, Cabinet Member for Waste, Street Scene and the Environment, said: “We are fully committed to tackling fly-tipping which is a blight on our city and something we take extremely seriously. Whenever we obtain evidence of fly-tipping we will investigate and look to issue either a fine or secure a conviction in the courts.

“Every householder has a duty to take all reasonable measures to ensure that any household waste produced on your property is only transferred to an authorised person. If you hire an unlicensed trader to do this and any dumped waste if traced back to you, it will be you facing prosecution. There are several ways to get rid of waste legally, such as by visiting the Household Recycling Centre in Fengate or using a licensed waste company.”
