City of Peterborough were crushed by Old Georgians in their opening National East Conference game of the season at Bretton Gate yesterday (September 30).

But a final scoreline of 7-1 was harsh on City who competed well for long periods against a team boasting current as well as ex-internationals.

Indeed Great Britain international scored four times for the Surrey-based visitors, three of them from second-half penalty corners.

Ben Reed and Sam Blunt both went close before Danny Sisson fired home with a first-time hit after good work from Adam Wilson.

Crucially some naivety enabled Old Georgians to restore their two-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time.

City, prompted by man-of-the-match Grady Wing, won several short corners early in the second-half before receiving a lesson in finishing from Ward.

City skipper Ross Booth was far from disheartened. He said: “If we can continue to improve as much as we did over the course of that one game then we will be competing for points everywhere we go this season.”
